Collaborative Fisheries Planning for Virginia’s Offshore Wind Energy Area – 2016
In 2009, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Minerals Management Service (now renamed the U.S Bureau of Ocean Energy Management) proposed offering offshore leases. A description of BOEM’s Virginia activities is available. This caused renewed interest in Virginia’s portion of the Atlantic Ocean. The Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program (VCZMP) has also devoted resources to Virginia’s Ocean Planning.
Virginia CZM has engaged stakeholders in a public planning process that:
- Minimizes conflicts among users
- Facilitates compatible ocean activities
- Preserves ecosystem health to meet economic, security, societal, and ecological goals
- Does not create new laws
